Anaconda not only supported the league by covering its expenses but also played a central role in its formation. Many of the company’s employees had relocated from Chicago in search of employment, bringing with them a deep-rooted passion for 16-inch softball.

Among these workers, four individuals with prior experience in 16-inch softball were selected as team captains, primarily because they possessed the skills necessary to pitch. Teams were assembled by a simple yet spirited method: players placed their names into a hat, and captains drew names to form their rosters. Game days typically followed a consistent routine—employees would finish their shifts, return home for an early dinner with their families, and then head to Sycamore Park to play. These events quickly became community gatherings, with families attending the games or enjoying the park’s atmosphere.

As interest in the league grew, additional teams were formed, prompting a rebranding to the “Industrial League.” The league expanded to include teams sponsored by a variety of local factories. Over time, participation extended beyond industrial companies, with many local bars forming teams and contributing to the league’s vibrant culture.

With the exception of a pause during the COVID-19 pandemic, the league has operated continuously since its founding in 1933—a testament to its enduring legacy in the Sycamore community.

President – Chad Gautcher – cgautch@yahoo.com

Vice President – Kevin Spartz – kevinspartz@gmail.com

League/Tournament Scheduler – Paul Aspengren – paspengren@gmail.com

Thanks for visiting our website!
